Bermuda’s best triumph in cycling team time-trial
A team made up of Caitlin Conyers, Conor White, Darren Glassford and Matt Boys triumphed in the KPMG Bermuda Junior Cycling Team Time-Trial.
The quartet, racing under the team name of Beauty and The Beasts, clinched victory in the Open category in a winning time of 20mins 31sec, more than 90 seconds ahead of the Gnosis/VT team made up of Fabian Schonenberg, Jackson Langley, Corey Brunton and Alan Mooney (22:57).
The podium places were completed by Rhys Pearce, Andrew Charlesworth, Sam Bullen and Kian Wookey, of BRCC Team 2, who finished in a time of 23:21.
Keon Stevens, Dylan Eiselt, Andrew Thomas and Zach Moniz, of the DKDZ team, were the top finishing junior men’s team in 24:55, which was good enough for fifth place overall, while the Bermuda Junior Cycling Ladies, made up of Skye Ferguson, Kelise Wade and Corina Bortoli (29:30), were the best placed junior women’s team in thirteenth overall.
Sanchez Smith, Jens Drea, Makeo Butterfield, Jasper Lau, of Team Slipstream, came out on top of the youth category, finishing ninth overall in a time of 26:10.
The competitors in that race, which took place on Sunday morning had just enough time to shower and change before the Bermuda Bicycle Association annual awards ceremony was held in the afternoon.
It was Conyers and White who took home top honours, with Conyers named female cyclist of the year on the back of a successful 12 months in which she clinched a bronze medal at the Central American and Caribbean Games as well as winning both the National Time Trial and Road Race Championship titles.
White was recognised with the corresponding male award after winning a gold medal at the Caribbean individual time trial and bronze medals at the Central American and Caribbean Games in El Salvador and the Pan Am Games in Chile. His bronze marked Bermuda's first medal at that event since 2015, while he also excelled domestically with victory in the national Criterium Championship.
Panzy Olander capped an encouraging year on both the road bike and mountain bike after being named the most improved adult, while Skye Ferguson, who performed strongly at the Caribbean Junior Road Championships, scooped the corresponding junior award.
There was also deserved recognition for Anabelle Miller, who was named junior cyclist of the year on the back of winning both national junior Road and Time Trial Championship titles, as well as a spirited performance at the Commonwealth Youth Games, where she narrowly missed out on the podium.
Greg Hopkins was named club person of the year, while Debbie Titterton Narraway picked up the award for race official of the year.
“Last year, Bermuda’s medal haul at the Caribbean Road Cycling Championships topped the charts with Bermuda now holding 104 medals since our country first competed in 2001,” said Peter Dunne, president of the BBA.
“This is vastly more that any other cycling federation in the Caribbean and is a true testament to the hard work and commitment of all involved in the Bermuda cycling community.”
