Matt Boys guns for criterium title as Kaden Hopkins heads to France
After capturing two national cycling titles in a space of three days, Kaden Hopkins has returned to France for continuation of his European racing season.
Hopkins won the time-trial last Thursday and three days later, he produced a great ride to secure his second consecutive road championship title.
The 24-year-old left Bermuda to join his Vendée U team-mates for a training camp in the Pyrenees mountain range, and will miss tomorrow’s National Criterium Championships.
“I don’t race criteriums, so there not so much benefit of having the jersey in that,” Hopkins said.
“I don’t contest that, Conor [White] and Nick [Narraway] race criteriums a lot more, so it’s a more important goal for them.
“From here, I’m going back to France because my team has a training camp in the Pyrenees, and then after that, the second half of the European season starts.”
The absence of Hopkins leaves last year’s winner, White, Narraway, Matt Boys and Dominique Mayho, the race organiser and one of the competitors, to fight for the title.
Boys, the winner of the Sinclair Packwood Memorial Race, declared that he was going for the criterium.
The 34-year-old Australian conserved his energy to finish third in the road championship, since he could not wear the jersey even if he had won it, as that is a preserve for Bermudians.
“I’ll have a try for sure because I love criteriums,’’ he said. “I’ll have a try for sure, I wouldn't enter the bike race if I didn't have a chance, I always try to win.
“Criteriums are the most fun, one hour, full gas, that’s the best and what I look forward to.”
Caitlin Conyers, absent from the time-trial and road race due to illness, has now recovered, with last year’s champion planning to enter tomorrow’s race.
If she goes ahead, the 34-year-old will face stiff competition from Liana Medeiros, Panzy Olander and Gabriella Arnold.
Runner-up in the time-trial and road race, Olander is excited about tomorrow’s season-ending competition.
“Since this is the last race of the season, I’m super excited that it’s a criterium,’’ Olander said.
“It is my favourite style of racing, so I look forward to the punchy corners and sprinting attacks. It will definitely be a challenge, but hope to just have fun and race well.”
