Bermuda’s up-and-coming cyclists will be seeking to fly the island’s flag high this weekend when they compete in the prestigious Junior Caribbean Road Championships, taking place in St Martin today and tomorrow.

This event will see the island’s promising young cyclists compete against the best junior riders from across the Caribbean region.

Zachery Moniz, Andrew Thomas and Skye Ferguson will be competing in the pre-junior category. In the junior class, Charlotte Millington is Bermuda’s only competitor.

Keon Stevens was also meant to make the trip to the Caribbean, but last-minute issues prevented him from travelling with the team.

Despite this setback, the Bermuda Bicycle Association announced that the budding riders are firmly focused and determined as they embark on this exciting challenge.

The action starts with the individual time-trial today, followed by the road race tomorrow.

Riders will get their skills, endurance and mental toughness tested as they navigate the demanding courses of St Martin.

Team manager Darren Glasford and mechanic Chequan Richardson accompanied the young cyclists, with the two expected to play a crucial role in supporting the island’s competitors.

Peter Dunne, the BBA president, expressed confidence in the young riders to make Bermuda proud at the two-day event.

"We are incredibly proud of our junior team and confident that they will represent Bermuda with excellence and sportsmanship," Dunne said.

"The Junior Caribbean Road Championships provide an important platform for our cyclists to compete at a high level, and we are excited to see what they can achieve.

“Bermuda have a proud history of success at the Junior Caribbean Championships, and this year’s team is eager to build on that legacy.

“Competing on an international stage is a tremendous opportunity for our young athletes to gain valuable experience.”
