Gosling’s to close Somerset store

A piece of history will be lost forever when Gosling’s Ltd closes its Somerset store for the last time on Saturday. The store, which has been in the town for almost 100 years, has had to shut for economic reasons. It follows the closure of the famous drinks company’s St George’s store at the end of 2009 due to lack of business and tourists in the east end.Charles Gosling, managing director of Gosling’s, said that a decline in walk-in trade meant that the company was unable to meet its expenses and the expansion of its warehouse in Hamilton to supply customers across the Island did away with the need for a site in the west end.Mr Gosling said that the staff base at the store on the corner of Main and Cambridge Roads had been downsized to one manager who would be relocated to Hamilton to work on the retail side of the business. The store had been at its current location since the early 1950s, having originally been situated in Somerset Village, according to Mr Gosling. He said that Gosling’s was in discussions about whether to rent out or sell the property, but he didn’t rule out the possibility of setting up a store in Dockyard if the opportunity became available and the market was there.Mr Gosling also hinted that the St George’s store may reopen dependent on cruise ship numbers and the construction of a hotel in the area. The company’s west end customers will continue to receive a free twice daily delivery service from its Hamilton warehouse. For more information contact 234-1544
