Perinchief wants ‘urgent review’ of real estate licence process
National Security Minister Wayne Perinchief has committed to an “urgent review” of processes related to real estate licence applications.Mr Perinchief made the comment after a meeting of the Real Estate Division of the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce yesterday.Realtors have been lobbying Government to scrap the rule requiring homeowners with non-Bermudian spouses to get licences for their property as they believe it has badly affected the real estate market. The Division’s president Leroy Douglas had invited Mr Perinchief to meet to inform him of the state of the real estate industry and to discuss ways to stimulate the sector.“The meeting was informative and productive,” Mr Perinchief said. “The industry’s representatives made an effective presentation on the issues.“I committed to an urgent review of our processes to ensure a better balance between the vetting required for licence applications and the need to demonstrate our partnership with this important sector of the local economy.”The Division’s members also invited the Minister to examine various policies related to the sale and acquisition of property by non-Bermudians and Permanent Resident Certificate (PRC) holders.“I believe the right balance can be struck in the areas of concern to the industry and will engage the Real Estate Division and other key stakeholders in continuing dialogue to achieve that,” Mr Perinchief said.
