Career fair cancellation a portent of the future Employer’s Council
The cancellation of the 2012 Career Fair was a major disappointment but not a surprise according to Bermuda Employer’s Council President Keith Jensen.Responding yesterday to the news that the annual fair would be cancelled due to a lack of funding, Mr Jensen said: “Available budgets for general initiatives are under review and any funds made available are used to maintain direct efforts such as adult training and retraining, college internships, WorkReady and school adoption programmes.“Without an improvement in the economy, charities, non-profit organisations and community events all worthy causes which regularly had no problems gaining support will continue to suffer.”Without the fair, he said students could have to research career information through the Department of Statistics website and school guidance counsellors. The fair was scheduled to take place at Bermuda College on October 18 and 19, geared towards getting middle school and high school students thinking about what they want to do and what they have to do to reach those goals.Organisers said that they reduced the budget for this year’s event by more than $100,000, but still found themselves unable to raise the funds needed.
