Wouldn’t it be nice ...

“A man who was completely innocent, offered himself as a sacrifice for the good of others, including his enemies, and became the ransom of the world. It was a perfect act.” - Mahatma GandhiEaster is upon us, the holiest time of the year, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ, on the third day after his crucifixion at Calvary. While many will observe the weekend at church, others will attend one, or more, of the many events going on around the Island, or they will just stay with family and friends. It is a shame, therefore, when so many are engaged in peaceful activities, that the police feel they have to step up their presence on the streets. This is what officers said at a press conference yesterday: “In line with our strategic intents of combating guns, gangs and violence I can reassure you that a robust policing plan is in place.“The public can expect to see higher than normal levels of police visibility. We apologise in advance and seek the patience of law-abiding citizens who may feel the effects of our proactive policing initiatives which can be expected throughout the weekend.”It is an unfortunate sign of the times that during such an important Christian festival that police have to take this sort of action. Would this have been the case in Bermuda even ten years ago?Wouldn’t it be nice if this newspaper was able to report on Monday on a ceasefire between gangs, that no one had been hurt in violent incidents, that …. there had been no crime.Sadly, the truth is likely to be far from that.To close with another quote:“If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.” - Mother TeresaWhat do you think?
