Eight Saltus pupils expelled
Eight students have been expelled from Saltus Grammar School after a 14-year-old pupil was put in hospital. The student was taken to the emergency room at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital after “birthday punches” got out of control.A Police spokesman said: “On Thursday, December 16, 2010, the Bermuda Police Service began an assault investigation as a result of a 14-year-old schoolboy who was taken to the emergency room at KEMH with injuries sustained at school.“The investigation is being conducted by the Vulnerable Persons Unit.”“Birthday punches” consist of punching someone on their birthday - once for each year, plus an extra “for luck”.Headmaster Ted Staunton said: “We do not condone birthday punches and we will not tolerate it. In this case, it seems that it went awry. I’m very disappointed that the students didn’t use their judgment. However, we are still looking into the details of what happened.”Under Mr Staunton, the school has adopted a strict policy on bullying. The incident follows three days of workshops in October, when the anti-bullying group Dare to Care was invited from Canada. The workshops included a day session which all members of faculty were required to attend.l Were you there when it happened? Email your story to jbell[AT]royalgazette.bm.
