Family show heart by adopting a school
Government's Adopt-a-School Programme has raised $70,000 towards the upkeep of the Island's public schools.In the latest donation, the Ministry of Education announced that Somerset Primary School had received $10,000 from the Green Family Scholarship.The initiative, which invites private individuals and companies to sponsor public schools, was launched by Education Minister Dame Jennifer Smith last year.Monies donated go towards the upkeep of the school.“We have ageing facilities with no current means of responding to their maintenance issues on a timely basis,” Dame Jennifer said when she announced the initiative.She and Attorney General Michael Scott presented Andrew Green a certificate of appreciation for his family's donation.Somerset Primary School principal Obrien Osborne was also on hand for the ceremony.The Green family is the most recent group to take part in the initiative.Jim Kerwin, of Rock Media Ltd and Oxford Communications, and former Premier Ewart Brown both adopted Victor Scott Primary and Harrington Sound Primary.Health Minister Zane DeSilva and his wife Joanne, of Island Construction Company Ltd, adopted Heron Bay Primary.Gerald Burt and his son, Senator David Burt of Burt Construction Ltd, have adopted Northlands Primary.
