Prayer is still part of school system

The Ministry of Education said that prayer remains a part of the public school system, contrary to a comment by a community activist.Keona Smith, founder of Colford’s Family Against Violence said on Sunday she felt the merging of the Island’s senior schools and a lack of prayer may have contributed to the increase in violence.Speaking at a vigil for Fredrick Maybury, outside Woody’s Restaurant on Sunday, she said: “I feel we have a lost generation. The mixing of the schools, taking the Lord’s Prayer out of the schools. I think there are a lot of factors that led to this genocide.”A Ministry spokeswoman responded to the statement yesterday, saying: “It is important to note prayer still forms a part of the Bermuda Public School System.“Morning assemblies including prayer are an integral component of the school day at all levels.”
