Fire causes damage to school equipment

A fire at CedarBridge Academy has caused major damage to a telecommunications room and smoke damage to several classrooms. An electrical fault is believed to have started the fire, which took place overnight when no staff or students were at the school. The blaze was confined to the telecommunications room, which is a fireproof room used to store equipment for the school’s phone and computer systems. The room’s equipment and walls suffered major damage and smoke spread to several classrooms, which were linked through equipment lines. The school’s fire alarm sounded at 11.30pm on Monday and 911 dispatchers directed the Bermuda Police Service to the scene. However, police officers reported they could not see anything and no one else was alerted.Security staff only discovered a fire had taken place as they did a routine check of the premises at about 7.30am on Tuesday. Security staff called the Bermuda Fire Service and an investigation into the cause of the fire is now underway.Larry Mussenden, chairman of governors at CedarBridge Academy, said no one was hurt as the building was empty at the time of the fire.He said he hoped the incident at the school would challenge students to become Bermuda’s chief fire officer or Commissioner of Police in years to come.Mr Mussenden said: “I extend my thanks on behalf of the CBA Board and school family to all of the services that attended the scene and who have helped to get the telecommunications room and the school back in order.”Work is being carried out to return the classrooms to use and the lessons of students have not been affected.
