Berkeley sees 93% graduation rate from its seniors
More than 100 Berkeley Students celebrated last week after they passed the Bermuda School Certificate Programme.According to school principal Michelle Simmons, 122 of 131 S4 students, around 93 percent, graduated, while another 12 students who started the year in S3 managed to graduate following a year of hard work.“This means that there are only nine S4 students who have not met the academic criteria for graduation at this time,” Ms Simmons said.“However, I expect that once they complete summer school, they should be able to remedy whatever deficits currently exist.”Of the graduates, 76 percent earned a grade-point average of 2.0 or above, and will receive Berkeley Institution Graduation Certificates, in addition to Bermuda School Certificates.Stefanny Sanchez was named the class Valedictorian, with a final average of 84.5 percent and a GPA of 3.68, while double honours student Assata Wedderburn was named Salutorian, with an average final mark of 85.67 percent and a GPA of 3.53.Ms Sanchez will be attending Queen’s University, while Ms Wedderburn intends to study at York University in the fall.In total, 40 of the graduates will start courses overseas in the fall, while many others will continue their education at Bermuda College.“Two students, Chioma Nwasike and Nathan Simmons have been granted Rotary Exchange scholarships and will be residing in Bolivia and Columbia respectively,” Ms Simmons said.“Ebony Butterfield and Phillip Shawn Herman will be travelling with the ‘Up With People’ programme, in which they will further cultivate their music skills while experiencing different cultures.”This year marked an increase in the number of male graduates at the school. While last year only 35 percent of the graduates were male, this year 42 percent of the class were young men.Addressing the graduates, Ms Simmons said: “By earning the academic credentials you will receive today, you have proved that you have everything you need to be successful.”For more pictures go to: http://www.royalgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/tngallery?Site=RG&Date=20110630&Category=NEWS&ArtNo=630009998&Ref=PH
