College hosts science events
Bermuda College is hosting a series of events to demonstrate the many facets of science.Under the theme ‘Sciences: Using Your Hands and Your Head’, the College will connect the pure sciences of biology, chemistry, physics and the environmental sciences with the applied sciences of woodwork, plumbing, electrical, masonry, HVAC, welding, automotive and culinary arts.Today, anthropology researcher Tucker Murphy will give a lecture exploring the conflict between humans and pumas in the temperate rainforests of Chile. His talk, organised by the Division of Liberal Arts, takes place in the North Hall Lecture Theatre at 6.30pm.Tomorrow, Bermuda’s middle and senior school students will visit the College campus for hands-on demonstrations and master classes to learn how the applied and natural sciences factor into a significant amount of career choices. From 6pm, adults are invited to a campus open house to explore career and retraining options in culinary arts and the technical sciences.Dean of Applied Sciences and Technology Llewellyn Trott said in a press release: “If you examine the statistics in the latest employment survey published by the Department of Statistics, there are a significant number of jobs in the applied sciences being held by non-Bermudians.“People fail to realise that the applied sciences are academic areas of study. We need to push our young people into these areas just as hard as we push them into other areas.“We invite the parents and the community at large to see where technical education is today: diagnostics, computer grids and matrices.“It’s a fascinating arena to enter and advance now days.”
