Sandys preschool to be moved as cost-saving measure

Lagoon Park Preschool is to move to Somerset Primary School to save Government money.Education Minister Dame Jennifer Smith said it is hoped the move from Ireland Island South to Gilbert Lane on Somerset Island will make life easier for parents and “ensure maximum use of school facilities”.She announced plans last year to switch various preschool locations to save cash without shedding jobs.At the beginning of the 2011 school year, Lyceum Preschool in Hamilton Parish moved from Wilkinson Avenue into the infant block of Francis Patton School to save $20,000 a year on rent.Making the latest announcement in the House of Assembly yesterday, she said the Lagoon Park move is the second step in the process, which will save $109,310 per year in rent.“The move comes after consultation with the principal and administrator of the two facilities and after ensuring that parental and teacher concerns were heard and considered,” she said. She believes the move will make life easier for parents who have one child in preschool and another in primary school.“Parents have advised that this move will make for easier delivery and pickup of their children, as they will no longer have to travel to Ireland Island before heading East to work,” she said. The Minister added: “Lagoon Park Preschool will retain its name and its independence under the administration of Sherri Bucci. Somerset Primary School will remain under the leadership of O’Brien Osborne.“While there are logistical details to be worked out, I am certain that there will be increased opportunities for interaction between the two schools.”She added: “The matter of school closures continues to arise from time to time.“I have to note that one of the reasons for not seeing this as a viable option at this time is because birth rates fluctuate and when there is lowered enrolment we want to first look at what opportunities for improvement this offers.“As I have stated previously, we intend to make full utilisation of all educational resources, be they human or structural.”Noting the annual rent paid by Lagoon Park, she said: “While there are costs associated with the relocation, in the long term there will be substantial savings.”She said work will take place over the summer to ensure the buildings and areas at Somerset Primary are suitable for the Lagoon Park students before the new school year begins.Questioning Dame Jennifer over her announcement, Shadow Education Minister Grant Gibbons asked if any teachers would lose their jobs as a consequence of the move. The Minister replied: “No teachers will lose their jobs.Asked by Dr Gibbons if the class sizes at Somerset Primary would change, she said that was an operational issue that she would asking about, but “I am sure that there will be some changes in class sizes”.Ms Bucci said she did not wish to comment on the news, and referred questions from this newspaper to her supervisor at the Ministry of Education, Llewellyn Simmons. Mr Osborne could not be reached for comment.
