Union applauds Supreme Court ruling
The Supreme Court’s overturning of two public school principal transfers has been hailed by the Bermuda Public Services Union as a breakthrough for greater dialogue.Chief Justice Ian Kawaley ruled that the Ministry of Education broke with an expected consultation with the TN Tatem Middle School and Victor Scott Primary School PTAs when their principals were ordered to move to other schools.Reacting to the successful court challenge by the PTAs, the union said there was a need for “more consultation on even a larger scale, in a tripartite effort that involves the unions, public and private sectors”.Consultation, the BPSU said, should involve “meaningful and constructive negotiation”.“Contrary to popular belief, trade unionists have an appreciation for business.“We know the importance of understanding the current economic climate relative to operations and the need for good industrial relations.”Useful website: www.bpsu.bm.
