Bar Council announces winners of 2012 Dame Lois Browne-Evans award
Two law students have won prestigious training contracts awarded in memory of Dame Lois Browne-Evans.Alison Hollis and Javone Rogers will spend a year at Carmelite Chambers in London, one of the UK’s leading law firms, as a result.Ms Hollis and Mr Rogers studied for their law degrees at the University of Kent in England.Ms Hollis, who went to Saltus Grammar School, has completed the Bar Professional Training course at City University in London.She won a 12-month contract, known as a pupillage, at Carmelite Chambers and a bursary of $25,000.Mr Rogers, who went to CedarBridge Academy, did his Legal Practice Course at the College of Law in London.He has been awarded a six month pupillage and a bursary of $12,500.Both will begin training at Carmelite Chambers on October 1. The scheme was spearheaded by the Bermuda Bar Council.Chief Justice Ian Kawaley, chairman of the award selection committee, said: “Although only a small percentage of Bermuda’s lawyers work in the criminal law field, the criminal justice system plays a central role in the administration of justice in Bermuda.“The two recipients of this year’s Dame Lois Browne-Evans award have earned their selection through their application and achievement at the academic and vocational stages.“The Bar Council and Carmelite Chambers are to be praised for making it possible for the awardees to receive first class practical training before they commence their legal careers.”Delroy Duncan, President of the Bermuda Bar Association said: “The Bar Council is delighted to announce that two candidates have been selected to receive the distinguished Dame Lois Browne-Evans Criminal Pupillage Award at Carmelite Chambers this year.“Alison Hollis and Javone Rogers both showed talent and promise.
