Educators celebrated on World Teachers’ Day
Bermuda celebrated its educators as part of World Teachers’ Day at City Hall.Education Minister Dame Jennifer Smith paid homage to teachers, alongside members of the Bermuda Union of Teachers.Meanwhile the One Bermuda Alliance pledged to pay teachers more.“We need to identify and make use of master teachers, to raise the quality of teaching, and raise the status of teachers,” said Shadow Education Minister Grant Gibbons.He called for “adequate training, ongoing professional development, and, in these difficult times, a safe and secure working environment”.Meanwhile, echoing the theme of this year’s observation of the UNESCO-founded event, Dame Jennifer said: “Today, we stand up for teachers.“In every highly effective classroom, we find a teacher who rallies students and their families with an ambitious vision of success.”Educator Richard North was hailed as teacher of the year at last week’s event.l Useful website: www.5oct.org
