The Island’s public schools have been given upgrades to the tune of $1.27 million.Public Works Minister Trevor Moniz said the work, undertaken in tandem with the Ministry of Education, would be finished in time for the schools’ opening date of September 6.Based on proposals from school principals, Mr Moniz said the renovations were divided among six small contracting firms, plus Works and Engineering teams. All schools got a touch-up of paint, with East End Primary, Heron Bay Primary, Prospect Primary, St George’s Preschool and West Pembroke Primary schools getting painted inside and out.New bathrooms were installed at West Pembroke Primary, and the facilities are currently under renovation at Elliot Primary, Paget Primary, Prospect Primary and West End Primary.“The bulk of works is complete, and buildings have been turned over to the custodians, who are busy with heavy cleaning and waxing of floors,” Mr Moniz said. Some additional projects will continue at several schools after the start of the coming year — but the Minister said the work wouldn’t disrupt teaching. The jobs range from roof repairs to a music room at Port Royal Primary, to work on the field at East End Primary by the Parks Department.TN Tatem Middle School Auditorium should receive new air conditioning units next week, while repairs to a wall will start at Dellwood Middle School.West End Primary is also to get an electrical upgrade, Mr Moniz added. He said about 20 contracts went out to private firms Team Six Maintenance, Just Roofs Plus, Jerry Smith and Family, Floyds Painting, Inside Out Painting, Daycor Painting Contractors and Tri Star.
