Somersfield Academy has hailed the success of its students, who passed the Middle Years Programme (MYP).

All Somersfield students predicted to earn their full MYP certificate were successful, with students scoring ahead of international averages in five subjects, including English and extended mathematics.

“This is a pleasing development as our increasingly experienced MYP teachers raise their level of expectations and we can see that students have responded positively with better and better scores,” a spokeswoman said.

“We particularly applaud Fae Sapsford who not only achieved a maximum seven points in six subjects, but scored 59 points out of a possible 63 maximum. This places her in the highest performing category worldwide.”

The spokeswoman said the programme is currently in place in more than 1,100 schools internationally, calling it a perfect complement to the school’s Montessori programme.

“It is a programme which recognises the interconnected nature of knowledge, a programme that educates the whole child through service to the community, and is a programme which recognises the individuality of each and every student through the medium of the personal project,” she said.

“Parents all over the world are well aware that long term success in a 21st century context is not solely based on straight ‘academics’. We need that success as a basis for continuing education but we need, too, an educational programme that teaches about social responsibilities, about the interdisciplinary nature of knowledge, about pursuing truth, peace and individual passions.

“We need to address healthy life choices to create healthy lifestyles. We need to be sure that our students are good communicators, understand collective responsibility and understand the need for independence, as well as community.”
