TN Tatem PTA calls for school relocation
The president of the parent-teacher association for TN Tatem Middle School, where teachers this week have staged two protests over the condition of the facility, has called for the school to be relocated for remediation.
Amin Smith, head of the PTA, called upon Wayne Scott, the Minister of Education, to abandon “staged” tackling of the school’s mould problem, saying treating the mould should “take place immediately and should be expedited until completion”.
Mr Scott earlier suggested Clearwater as a possible alternative, should TN Tatem have to be emptied.
So far, four classrooms in TN Tatem have been closed off to treat outbreaks of potentially toxic mould — but a government health and safety report has found that the rest of the school remains fit for use.
The PTA believes that students and teachers could still be exposed to mould, and has called for the issue to be resolved “as a priority”.
“We will consider seeking injunctive relief in the Supreme Court and are in the process of seeking legal advice with reference to the same,” the statement concluded, adding: “The PTA will advise parents to avoid letting their children enter the building based on the report provided by the Government, as we did on Friday, December 2,”
