A soccer ball, a marble run, a fidget spinner, an owl costume and a horse stable were among the creations at the 2017 Cardboard Challenge.

Young engineers from the Bermuda Homeschool Network took part in the event, inspired by the Imagination Foundation’s Global Cardboard Challenge, at Bermuda National Trust, Waterville.

It is the third year that Bermuda Homeschool Network families have taken part in the Cardboard Challenge, which culminates in a Global Day of Play tomorrow.

BNT education officer Julie Steele said in a press release: “Each year, the participants find something new to make, and really enjoy the chance to share that with others.

“The Challenge lets children explore their interests and passions; teaches critical thinking, resourcefulness, perseverance, teamwork and other 21st century skills; and brings communities together to foster and celebrate child creativity.”

Participant Olivia Heffernan said: “Me and my brother tried five times to make a marble run, and then we threw it out because it didn’t work. So we decided to ask for advice and help each other. We made a car game and another game called Roll Ball.”

Eden Furbert said: “I was supposed to make a time machine, but it didn’t work out. So I made a stable this morning to hold up the cardboard horses.”

Sari Smith said: “At first we couldn’t come up with any ideas, but after talking and canny jokes, we came up with a ‘Choose Your Own Adventure Game.’”

Malaikah Abdul-Jabbar said: “I, for one, thoroughly enjoyed the Cardboard Challenge. It gave us a chance to get out of the house and get our creative juices flowing. If we don’t have a reason to use our ideas, they just say in our heads.”
