Finalists named for island’s top teacher
Ten finalists have been named for a top teacher award set up by a charity that supports public schools.
The Bermuda Education Network unveiled the contenders in the running for its Outstanding Teacher Award 2019.
They are:
Sandra Burrows — Berkeley Institute
Dameka Dublin — Dellwood Middle School
Kristi Foggo — St David’s Primary School
Enid Furbert-Jacobs — West Pembroke Primary School
Antoinette Hollis — Harrington Sound Primary School
Rosalyn Minors — Warwick Preschool
Diamond Outerbridge — Berkeley Institute
Daishawnai Richardson — East End Primary School
Alandra Swan — Francis Patton Primary School
Hewitt Taylor — Berkeley Institute
Candidates were nominated by their peers earlier this month. Finalists were then selected by a committee.
The winner is chosen based on classroom observations.
Becky Ausenda, the executive director of the BEN, congratulated the teachers “for your exceptional teaching ability and going above and beyond for your students”.
She added: “We received a record 50 nominations this year and wish to thank everyone who took the time to send in a nomination.
“BEN looks forward to honouring these inspirational teachers at our coming event.”
The winner will be named as part of the charity’s annual fundraiser, a Chinese new year celebration. The event takes place at the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club on February 8 at 7pm.
Tickets cost $175 with proceeds to benefit the BEN’s work “supporting both students and teachers and providing experiential learning opportunities in the arts, social studies, science and sailing”.
A silent auction will also be held at the event.
