Four educators have been appointed acting principals in Bermuda’s public schools, the Commissioner of Education has announced.

Kalmar Richards named Enid Furbert-Jacobs as acting principal for Purvis Primary, Jana Pitcher for Gilbert Institute, Linda Holdipp for Northlands Primary, and Sonia Haley for Paget Primary.

The appointments, which came after retirements and a resignation, are effective at the start of the next school year.

Kalley Baxter-Williams, Lisa Swan and Kenneth Caesar will continue as acting principals at Sandys Secondary Middle School, Clearwater Middle School and CedarBridge Academy respectively.

An education ministry spokeswoman said the recruitment process for “substantive post holders” was ongoing and required a number of steps that would not have enabled the Department of Education to have them confirmed and in place for September.

As a result, the department began a process to select acting principals for the start of the coming school year.

This process enabled the department to give school staff and parents advance notice of the appointment and an opportunity to connect with the acting principals beforehand.

Ms Richards said: “We are grateful to these educators for stepping up to the plate for our students and families in our schools.

“Together they bring decades of experience as educators and I am confident that they will make a valuable collective contribution to improving student achievement.”
