Schools Report: possible uses for buildings
The Government has prioritised public service, community and commercial use for the buildings that will be left after eight public primary schools close.
Alternative future uses for the sites were detailed in the Parish Primary School Decisions report released following consultation.
The future use of primary school buildings and sites was a “critical issue” raised during the consultation, the report said.
Options listed as alternative uses are as follows:
• St David’s Primary School in St George: a community centre or mixed commercial use.
Northlands Primary School in Pembroke: government facilities.
• Gilbert Institute in Paget: Bermuda College use, tourism, residential, sporting village for visiting teams.
• Heron Bay Primary School in Southampton: government offices, community centre, commercial workshop, storage facility.
• Port Royal Primary School in Southampton: alternative care facility, mixed-use commercial property, shared commercial kitchen.
• West End Primary School in Sandys: senior wellness centre, senior care facility, community centre, government offices.
The report added: “The Department of Public Lands and Buildings will research the demand from public services for new facilities. Special consideration will be given to public services currently housed in the private sector as this can reduce rental expenditure.
“There is also the option to land bank these properties as Bermuda is not creating more land and this would preserve the land for future generations.
“Alternatively, properties can be put out to tender for commercial purposes to help create economic investment and growth. A Request for Expressions of Interest is an option to research the market for potential ideas.”
