Students invited to take part in Reg Grundy photo competition
School students are being invited to enter a photography competition launched in memory of the late nature photographer Reg Grundy.
The National Museum of Bermuda and Joy Grundy, Dr Grundy’s widow, are encouraging all primary, middle and high school students aged from 7 to 18 to participate.
The Dr Reg Grundy Annual Youth Photography Competition, now in its third year, creates an opportunity for young people to demonstrate their appreciation for Bermuda’s natural and cultural environment.
The competition invites participants to photograph a theme of interest: Bermuda Families, Bermuda Buildings or Bermuda Nature, and capture their chosen theme using a smart phone or digital camera.
Elena Strong, the museum’s executive director, said: “The past year and a half has been challenging for us all, especially for students who have had to adapt to remote learning and pivot back and forth between classroom and home.
“They have shown incredible resilience and strength and we hope that this competition provides an opportunity to be curious, connect with our natural and cultural heritage and have fun.”
Dr Grundy, AC, OBE, is a key figure in the history of international television production and distribution. Wildlife photography became a passion of the Australian-Bermudian and he spent much time photographing longtails on the cliffs of Astwood Park in Warwick.
Mrs Grundy added: "When people used to ask my husband how he got the perfect shot, he would say, ‘The perfect shot is elusive. You just have to keep taking photos. Keep on shooting and learning more about your craft’.
“These words of Reg’s seem fitting for year three of our competition and I would encourage all who participate to keep taking photos, to keep trying and to know that the more you work at it, the more you'll develop your skill and the more you will fall in love with photography. Best of luck to all entrants this year."
Competition rules, deadlines and prizes can be found online at www.nmb.bm/RG-photo-competition where submissions can also be made.
An award ceremony will be held on Thursday, December. 9
