Pupils can study a wider range of subjects with others from around the world after a school joined an international programme.

Saltus became the island’s first member of the Global Online Academy.

A spokeswoman explained that the network brought together independent schools from different countries with the common mission “to reimagine learning to empower students and educators to thrive in a globally networked society”.

Middle and senior school pupils at Saltus will benefit from the membership.

The spokeswoman explained: “Course curriculum is offered online and varies in length and complexity.

“On-demand flex courses are also available to Saltus faculty to supplement their in-classroom learning.

“By becoming a member school, Saltus will both expand the course offerings and learning experiences available to students and provide them with the opportunity to explore a passion or topic of interest with other students from around the world.”

Deryn Lavell, the head of school, said: “This is an exceptional opportunity for Saltus and an extraordinary opportunity for our community to provide online learning pathways for students, transformative professional development for teachers, and to join a global network of schools and educators doing the same.”

Ann Paynter, the director of academic organisation and site director for GOA at Saltus added: "Creating the opportunity through GOA to leverage technology and modern learning skills, supports Saltus in its quest to prepare students for college and beyond.

“Having the opportunity to study from over 50 GOA courses such as arts entrepreneurship, introduction to investments, bioethics, creative writing, game theory, and introduction to artificial intelligence also allows our students to follow their passion.”

Pupils have already taken GOA courses such as Lies Data Tell Us and Designing Excellent Questions.

A Saltus Graduate Year 2 student, who is taking a 14-week architecture course, said: “It’s an amazing experience to work with my classmates, who are from all over the world.

“I enjoy the assignments, and I can do them in my own time and in my own way.

“The course is rigorous and hands on. I’m really learning how to be independent and manage my time.

“Architecture is an area I’d like to pursue at university and can’t wait to develop my understanding further.”

The Saltus spokeswoman added: “Thanks to GOA’s one-of-a-kind classes and professional development courses — not ordinarily available at Saltus — community members can explore new ideas and deepen their passions, anytime, anywhere.”
