Youngsters get a chance to learn about shipwrecks
Youngsters will learn about the history of shipwrecks this Saturday as part of a monthly youth education initiative.
The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute will showcase a short film about shipwrecks around the island throughout the afternoon.
Each showing will also be followed by a reading of Shipwreck (Leap Through Time), which explores the life of a fictional Spanish ship from the 16th century.
The events are both a part of this month’s Kids Hour Saturdays, which explore a new topic about the ocean for children on the third Saturday of every month.
A BUEI spokesperson said: “Shipwrecks are uniquely interesting because they provide endless insight into our history over the centuries.
“Each wreck hosts a wealth of information and insight into the cultural dynamics of the time, as well as the health and life cycle of our seas.
“We are excited to be offering a film that is based in Bermuda’s waters and on our history and we cannot wait to inspire curiosity and appreciation for the ocean surrounding us in all those who attend.”
The film, Keepers of the Reef, was created by BUEI and the New England Aquarium and touches on the shipwrecks found by Teddy Tucker, a world-renowned ocean explorer. It will be shown at 11am and 2pm.
Kids Hour Saturdays is open to youngsters aged five to 12.
The event is free for BUEI members and all caregivers, while each child of non-members costs $2.50.
The final Kids Hour Saturday will take place on June 18.
