Engineering and finance students have until the end of this week to apply for scholarships being offered by Belco.

A company spokesman said that the aim of the programme, which is worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, was to increase the number of Bermudians working in engineering and finance.

The company is offering scholarships in four categories.

The Llewellyn Vorley Engineering Scholarship provides the recipient the opportunity to further their knowledge in engineering fields and to share knowledge and experience with the company and wider community. The four-year scholarship award is $25,000 each year.

The Belco Stem education awards are open to students studying for an undergraduate degree in science, technology, engineering and maths.

The number of awards and value — between $2,500 and $20,000 — will be at the discretion of the selection committee. These awards are for a first degree and are for one academic year only.

Candidates must have provisional acceptance or notification to an accredited educational institution.

The AT Oughton Post Graduate Business and Finance Scholarship aims to increase the number of qualified Bermudians in the business and finance fields. The scholarship is valued at up to $25,0000 for one year and will be granted to a suitable candidate studying for a graduate degree in a business or finance discipline.

The C. Eugene Cox Post Graduate Environmental Studies and Sustainability Scholarship is valued at up to $25,000 for one year.

The scholarship will be granted to a candidate studying for a graduate degree in renewable energy, sustainability, engineering, environmental studies or information technology.

A company spokesman said: “Belco is committed to a sustainable energy future and this scholarship will increase the number of qualified Bermudian engineers so that the company can achieve its sustainability goals.”
