Rotary awards focus on work with young people
Young people, as well as Rotarians, were recognised for their achievements and dedication at Government House last week.
The Governor, Rena Lalgie, presented awards to Sean Kyle Simmons, Yoenn Pugi, Hilda Ndony and Tre Simmons for completing an eight-week Toastmasters course.
Kemaini Trott was also supposed to receive the award but was unavailable.
Toastmasters International teaches people around the world public speaking and leadership skills.
Mary Shackleton, a former Rotary district governor, guided the awardees through the programme.
Ms Lalgie also recognised Rotarians David Sullivan, Kirk Kitson, Tracy Adams, George Cook, Frederick Ming, Sony Kessaram and Gary Edwards for their commitment to Bermuda’s young people.
Mr Sullivan, a former Rotary district governor, contributed to the organisation’s youth exchange programmes for many years.
Mr Kitson helped to bring the Rotary’s youth division, Interact, to the island almost 50 years ago.
Interact allowed many young people to represent Bermuda at international conventions and workshops.
Mr Adams encouraged youth to get involved in their community.
Dr Cook, president emeritus at the Bermuda College, helped students to earn interest-free loans to study overseas.
Mr Ming worked at the Bermuda College’s culinary arts programme for many years.
Ms Kessaram spearheaded Pembroke Rotary Club’s backpack programme, which has benefited countless foster children and their families.
Mr Edwards has contributed to the Rotary’s children’s raffle and fun fair, which have raised more than $2 million for the island’s public schools.
