Two Bermuda Police officers have been trained to confront an active shooter through the US Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Police sergeants Terry Trott and Michael Thomas finished advanced armed police training with officers from four British Overseas Territories, hosted by the Royal Turks & Caicos Police Force.

US Consul-General Karen Grissette commended the two after the “demanding, vigorous and intensive” Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training from April 10 to 14 in Turks & Caicos.

They joined police from Anguilla, the Cayman Islands, and Turks & Caicos in the course for first responders to “isolate, distract, and neutralise persons seeking to cause harm to communities”.

Ms Grissette said the Bermuda Police Service had engaged in “several” law enforcement courses provided by the US in recent months.

Martin Weekes, the BPS Assistant Commissioner, thanked Turks & Caicos Commissioner of Police Trevor Botting and the FBI.

“We are very proud of the achievements of sergeants Trott and Thomas and for completing this intensive course and representing Bermuda.”

Mr Botting said: “We value our relationship and partnership with US law enforcement agencies, and I thank the training team for the delivery of an outstanding training event, training which has equipped officers to respond to any high threat to our communities and ensure they are kept safe.

“I was pleased to host colleagues from other British Overseas Territories, which has enhanced our ability to support each other for training and operations.

“All of the officers performed to a high level and were successful through a highly demanding course. I congratulate them on their success.”
