Clearwater Middle School honours Mary Prince with film
The story of Mary Prince, the Bermudian abolitionist and National Hero, has been brought to life in a student film at Clearwater Middle School.
Kamila Simons, an M1 student, plays the central character in The Life of Mary Prince, which had its premiere in the school auditorium on June 16.
Edited by Dean Foggo, the deputy principal, the film was a collaboration between students and staff. Fourteen students acted in it and nine were screenwriters.
“It’s crucial for students to understand and embrace their heritage,” social studies teacher Shimaine Furroze said. "This project was about giving students a platform to voice their history openly and proudly."
Education minister Diallo Rabain praised the students at the premiere, urging them to be proud of their hard work and self-belief, and said that they had showcased their talents brilliantly through the telling of Prince’s story.
