The 2023 International Baccalaureate results announced for the Bermuda High School today showed 100 per cent of students achieving their diploma.

The school’s new head teacher, Carol Swainson, said that the “excellent” examination results put BHS well ahead of the worldwide pass rate of 79.3 per cent.

“I am excited to be joining a school where it is clear that students work hard to achieve their goals alongside dedicated teachers who support them to fulfil their potential.”

Ms Swainson said that the cohort’s average diploma point score was 33, well above the worldwide average of 30.

The school shared its top students’ results and university destinations.

Ava Gibson, 42 points, will attend University College London to study law.

Laura Hupman, 41 points, heads to Dalhousie University in Canada for mathematics.

Marli Spriggs, 41 points, joins the University of Warwick in England to study politics, philosophy and economics.

Anna Marcotte, 38 points, will attend the University of Western Ontario, Canada, studying business.

Sierra DeSousa, 36 points, goes to the University of Leeds in England for criminal justice and criminology.

Anya Podgaits, 36 points, will attend McGill University in Canada, studying statistics.

Sarah Wheddon, the BHS head of IB, said that the 2023 exam session ran smoothly for graduates.

“I am so proud of how they have supported each other throughout the two-year IB programme.

“They are an especially close year group and they have each demonstrated leadership skills in their own way and been excellent role models for our younger students.

“They have shown growth and resilience and I am confident that they are ready for the next chapter in their education.”

She said that graduates came with diverse interests and career plans.

They will attend universities in Canada, the United States, Britain and Europe.

Disciplines to be studied include environmental, biomedical and geographical sciences, fine art, physics and astrophysics, and sports management.

In Canada, students will attend Dalhousie University, McGill University, the University of Western Ontario and the University of Toronto.

Graduates going to the US will attend the University of Vermont and James Madison University.

In Britain, students will be attending the Universities of Bournemouth, Brighton, Exeter, Leeds, Leicester, Reading, Surrey, Warwick and University College London.
