US professor to give presentation at BUEI
Students and adults can hear from an esteemed science professor at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute next week.
Vernon R. Morris, professor of chemistry and environmental sciences and director of the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences at Arizona State University’s New College of Disciplinary Arts and Sciences, will give a free presentation at BUEI’s Tradewinds Auditorium on October 18.
According to a BUEI spokeswoman, Dr Morris’s various educational outreach programmes have influenced more than 50,000 students around the world, many who come from underserved communities.
The spokeswoman added: “Recognising that science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields represent one of the fastest-growing sectors in the global economy, Dr Morris emphasises the importance of exposing more Bermudians to these disciplines.
“This exposure, coupled with robust academic preparation, empowers individuals to address Bermuda's most pressing challenges while advocating for those most affected by them.”
According to BUEI chief executive Karla Lacey, the event will prepare participants for next month’s Youth Climate Summit.
She added: “We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the US Consulate General for their sponsorship of Dr Morris’ visit to Bermuda in support of the Youth Climate Summit.
“Their commitment to empowering our youth and advancing the cause of climate action is invaluable and we are deeply appreciative of their support in making this event possible.”
The presentation, which will run from 5.30pm until 7.30pm, will have a question and answer period and light dinner will be served.
