Education: potential olive branch for West End school
A rethink of the assessment of primary schools under education reforms could have implications for pressure groups opposing the closure of schools such as West End Primary.
Diallo Rabain, the education minister, said the “revisit” of the procedure, revealed in July, would come with a score for “history and legacy”.
“The ministry has always recognised the significance of preserving the rich history and legacy of Bermuda's schools and, to that end, empanelled the History and Legacy Working Group in 2022.“
He said each school had been invited on October 6 to put forward three representatives to detail its background.
Nominations were to be submitted by Friday.
Scoring, used for the decisions made under reforms, will be reviewed with history and legacy added, in parishes with more than one primary school.
Mr Rabain said it would address concerns raised by the group West End Warriors, which has campaigned for the preservation of the historic school.
He said there would be continuing dialogue “with all stakeholders, considering all perspectives”.
“We are committed to ensuring that our decisions reflect the needs and aspirations of our community.
“Schools and their representatives will soon be informed of a timeline for meetings with the working group.”
