BUEI hosts January jellyfish event for children

The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute will dive headfirst into the topic of jellyfish during a child-focused education programme this weekend.

The first Kids Hour Saturdays of the year will take place with a screening of an episode of the show Jonathan Bird’s Blue World.

The episode, titled Palau Jellyfish Lake! (Would you swim with a million jellyfish?), sees the nature photographer and his team explore the aforementioned lake situated in the Republic of Palau near the Philippines.

The lake, found on one of the republic’s many islands, is home to thousands of golden jellyfish and moon jellyfish.

Children will then be treated to a reading of Peanut Butter and Jellyfish, a picture book in which a seahorse named Peanut Butter and his best friend, Jellyfish, go on an adventure to rescue their grumpy neighbour, Crabby.

The book, according to a BUEI spokeswoman, teaches children about the value of friendship, the consequences of bullying and the importance of owning up to one’s mistakes.

Kids Hour Saturdays are open to children aged 5 to 12 years.

The hour-long event will start at 11am and repeat until 2pm. Parents must be present for the whole hour.

The event is free for children of BUEI members and all caregivers, while admission for children of non-members is $4.

Space is limited and advanced registration is encouraged, which can be done by calling 294-0204 or by e-mailing giftshop@buei.bm.
