Belco after-school club links with Northlands
An after-school programme run by the island’s electricity provider has partnered with Northlands Primary School in Pembroke.
Belco’s Odyssey Programme meets once a week for students to get hands-on learning experience with company staff.
Pupils learn about Belco and get engineering and critical-thinking skills, as well as activities focused on science, technology, engineering and maths.
Topics include safety in the classroom and home, infrared and ultrasound technology, sustainability, mechanical and chemical power generation, and electricity transmission and distribution.
Belco said the pilot programme had proved “a great success” and would run throughout the school year.
The company added that the club offered a learning-and-development pathway for youngsters interested in a career at Belco.
The programme is for students aged 9 to 11.
Wayne Caines, the president of Belco, said the company was “thrilled” to partner with Northlands after the launch of Odyssey last year.
He added that the utility enjoyed “a long and proud history of community partnerships and education”.
Tamicia Darrell, the principal of Northlands, said: “I envision this after-school club as an opportunity for our students to engage in weekly activities with Belco volunteers who provide opportunities for our students to have hands-on learning experiences.
“These experiences include exposure to 21st-century skills that our students will need to be successful in the workforce.”
