The Government is planning to expand the number of places available at summer day camps this year.

Owen Darrell, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, said that officials had teamed up with private camp operators to boost the number of places available.

Speaking in the Senate, Mr Darrell said: “I understand that many parents are eagerly awaiting information about registration for their children to attend the camps.

“We are actively working on finalising the logistics with the venues and will provide an update soon regarding the registration process.

“This year, we are also diligently working on an initiative to address the wait list that occurs every year for our highly popular summer day camp programme.

“We aim to assist in alleviating the stress of finding safe and affordable summer services for their children.

“The department plans to expand availability at public summer camps and collaborate with private camp operators to secure additional spaces.”

Mr Darrell also appealed for volunteers to help run the camps.

He pointed out that the programme provided excellent experience opportunities for students studying education at university who were looking for work during the summer break.

Mr Darrell told senators: “Summer day camps often provide fun and enriching experiences for both campers and staff. Working at a summer day camp can be incredibly rewarding, offering the opportunity to make a positive impact on children's lives, build lasting friendships with colleagues, and have a lot of fun in the process.

“With around 180 positions available, the programme hosts hundreds of young people across multiple camp locations from east to west.

“For individuals passionate about working with children and seeking practical experience in this field, this opportunity provides a valuable platform for personal and professional growth.”

Positions available include supervisors and assistant supervisors, counsellors, specialists in areas such as art, dance, maths, and sport, and also paraeducators.

The programme prioritises providing opportunities for students studying in the fields of education or humanities to gain practical experience in their respective fields.

Mr Darrell said: “This employment opportunity is particularly beneficial for those studying or interested in the field of education. Many young people pursue studies in Education intending to become teachers, and this programme offers hands-on experience that complements their academic pursuits.”

Applicants must be at least 17 years old and hold valid CPR, First Aid and Scars certifications.
