Sloop Foundation calls for brave souls to take the plunge

Volunteers are wanted for the Bermuda Sloop Foundation’s annual Pirates of Bermuda Walk the Plank fundraiser set for March 24.

The popular event comes with “captives” getting seized and the community donating funds to save or sink them by having them “walk the plank” into Hamilton Harbour.

Victims will take the plunge from noon until 2pm at the No 1 Car Park in Hamilton.

Funds go towards the Foundation’s programmes and the Spirit of Bermuda training vessel.

Jay Kempe, the BSF cofounder and chairman of the board, said: “Spirit of Bermuda is a purpose-built training vessel for the youth of Bermuda and an established icon evoking the island’s distinguished maritime heritage.

“Since 2006, we have impacted the lives of over 8,000 students, equipping them with the skills needed to succeed in life. Our five-day, four-night residential character and educational development voyages for middle-school students are unique and the only programme of its kind operating in Bermuda to world-class standards.

“Every year we count on the generosity of public and private donors to continue these programmes and maintain Spirit — helping our young people develop social and emotional skills, facilitating careers in the maritime industry and flying the flag for Bermuda at home and overseas.

“Pirates of Bermuda is our biggest fundraiser and we look forward to it every year. This year we have some great sponsors providing food and beverages, including Goslings and Bermuda Cupcake Company.”

He added: “It’s a fun family event and we hope you’ll come out to enjoy the day and support Bermuda Sloop Foundation.”
