Belco accepting applications for scholarships
The Bermuda Electric Light Company is accepting applications for several scholarships.
The awards are open to Bermudian graduate and undergraduate students pursuing degrees in information science technology, business and finance, and environmental and sustainability studies. Awards will also be made to candidates pursuing engineering studies.
Recipients will return to work at Belco after completing studies.
In engineering, successful candidates will receive $25,000 for four years of studies under the Llewellyn Vorley Engineering Scholarship. Awardees will have the opportunity to enhance and share their knowledge and experience with the company and wider community, Belco said.
It added that the aim “is to increase the number of qualified Bermudian engineers participating in the field and to ensure assistance for the recipient’s educational endeavours”.
Funding of $2,500 to $20,000 per year will be made to successful candidates who qualify for the Belco Stem education awards scholarship. Candidates must have provisional acceptance or notification of acceptance to an accredited educational institution to qualify, the company said.
In the field of business and finance, a successful candidate will receive $25,000 in funding for graduate studies through the A.T. Oughton Postgraduate Business and Finance Scholarship.
The aim of the award is to increase the number of Bermudians in finance, Belco said. The company said the award will be made in accordance with “the vision, mission and values of Belco.” It also highlighted the importance of business and finance to its “leadership requirements.”
Belco said through the success of awardees of this scholarship, it would be able to “meet the commitment to be Bermuda’s trusted and preferred provider of energy and infrastructure solutions.”
Funding of up to $25,000 for a year will be given to a successful candidate pursuing a graduate degree in renewable energy, sustainability engineering, environmental studies, and information technology or related discipline under the C. Eugene Cox Postgraduate Environmental Studies and Sustainability Scholarship.
“Belco has been empowering Bermudians for decades through scholarships, awards and internships,” Belco president Wayne Caines said.
“As we look to the future, and our goal to build a renewable energy company, we need qualified, knowledgeable employees and these scholarships are critical for the development of our workforce.
“I encourage those interested in the fields, and who are motivated to build a career at a great company, to submit an application so that the next generation of Bermudians will have the training and expertise to help us achieve our future sustainability goals.”
