Hannah Taylor, a student of Bermuda High School, has won a chance to compete in the English Speaking Union’s international public-speaking competition in London in May.

Ms Taylor won the prize of a round-trip ticket to London after she was declared overall senior public-speaking winner in the recently concluded 14th Annual Bermuda Spring Debating and Public Speaking tournament.

The event was hosted at Saltus Grammar School’s St John’s campus from February 29 to March 2.

According to a statement, Ms Taylor was presented with the prize by a representative of the ESU.

The three-day event attracted participation from more than 70 students from BHS, Saltus, Somersfield Academy and Warwick Academy.

“This event is a wonderful opportunity for students to explore public speaking and debate in its various forms and expand their communication skills in a competitive form,” Christianna Dakin, of Saltus, said.

“The success of this event was dependent on the support of Saltus and the wider Bermuda community, including 90 parents, alumni, teachers and students who supported judging and timekeeping,” she said.

“It is all for the benefit of all the students, and we couldn’t have done it without them,” Ms Dakin added.

In October, 45 international teams will assemble in Bermuda to compete in the International Independent Schools Public Speaking Competition.

The three-day event, which runs from October 17, will be co-hosted by Saltus and BHS.
