Concert renamed in honour of 9/11 victim
Warwick Academy has renamed its spring concert in memory of a former student who died in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York, the school said yesterday.
This year, the Sounds of Spring senior student concert will honour Rhondelle Tankard for the first time. She excelled in music at the institution, the school said.
The rechristening was decided upon after sixth-form students attending the school discovered a photograph of Ms Tankard at the 9/11 memorial in New York city during a visit.
The school said the students were “astonished when they went inside and found Rhondelle’s photo in her Warwick Academy uniform”.
Ms Tankard, who attended Warwick Academy from 1982 to 1987, died on her first day of work at Aon on 9/11. She was on the 102nd Floor of the South Tower when tragedy struck.
The school described Ms Tankard as a “self-confident and enthusiastic young lady, who made a significant contribution to the school”.
“She had a wonderful sense of humour along with possessing good common sense,” it added.
Ms Tankard was a member of the school’s orchestra and choir. She also completed the Royal Schools of Music exams in piano, theory and violin.
Warwick Academy said the senior students were “so incredibly moved by what happened on 9/11 that they decided they wanted to do a student-led music concert in her memory with music that she would have loved.”
Such concerts are usually held on September 11 annually but the school noted that “a better tribute was to wait until the spring of each year and dedicate the senior concert in her honour.”
Funds raised at the event, which is open to all ages, will go towards the school’s general music fund and a fund that was set up in Ms Tankard’s name, Warwick Academy said.
The latter will assist in overseas travel costs for students taking part in summer music intensives.
