Think global and act local is message at Round Square Day
Students of Bermuda High School joined 250 schools around the world to celebrate Round Square Day yesterday.
This year, the event was observed under the theme A Bermudian Renaissance, the school said. It emphasised the importance of Bermuda’s global position at the celebrations.
“Today’s Round Square Day will help us to be ‘glocal’, meaning think globally, act locally,” school principal Carol Swainson said.
“After all, Bermuda is impacted by the world stage via its businesses and geographical location. Learning about ourselves will help us to engage with the wider world,” she added.
BHS is the only institution that celebrates Round Square Day in Bermuda, and the school has stuck to the ideals of the event, which signify internationalism, democracy, environmentalism, adventure, leadership and service.
Round Square Day is usually celebrated by the secondary department of BHS. However, the primary students were included in the celebrations this year. They donned colourful capes and crowns, and the primary girls paraded around in their favourite Round Square Discovery Heroes, the school said.
The school’s campus was decorated with Bermuda-themed chalk drawings exemplifying the island’s unique characteristics.
The morning festivities yesterday included displays of Bermuda-themed crafts, and these were complemented by songs and a panel discussion by past students.
At lunchtime, students had the opportunity to buy beverages and snacks from a marketplace set up to augment the celebrations. Some of the money raised will be go towards the BHS Adventure Fund, which supports students in attending school trips and activities, the school said.
A mini-Cup Match, kite-making, cooking and locally themed drama projects kept the students entertained in the afternoon.
BHS serves as a host school for foreign exchange students within the Round Square network. As such, students have the unique opportunity to participate in various conferences, service trips and exchanges.
This networking has enabled students to travel to several countries, including Namibia, Kenya, New Zealand, the United States, Japan, Peru, South Africa and Germany to take part in activities.
