Rabain speaks on World Poetry Day
Diallo Rabain, the Minister of Education, stressed the importance of poetry to students on Thursday.
Students from East End Primary, St George’s Preparatory and St David’s Primary schools shared spoken word, poetry and music pieces during an event sponsored by the Corporation of St George. The celebration took place in King’s Square on World Poetry Day.
World Poetry Day, which is held every March 21, aims to promote the art form and support linguistic diversity through poetic expression.
Mr Rabain said poetry “thrives in the music we hear, the dances we watch and the paintings we admire”.
“Poetry is a powerful vessel of expression, a bridge connecting the sonnet to the song, the stanza and the street art,” he added.
The minister encouraged all students in Bermuda to “find their voice and embrace the courage to speak, write and share”.
He added: “Let your verses be as vivid as the colours of Bermuda and as moving as the waves that kiss our shores.”
Mr Rabain then recited a verse from Bermudian Persis Butler’s poem A Beautiful, Bermudaful Day, which he said “resonates with the spirit of Bermuda”.
It’s a beautiful, Bermudaful day
And everything’s going my way
I’ve got to sing my song and clap my hands
Just celebrate this wonderful day
I’ve got to sing my song and clap my hands
Just to celebrate this wonderful day.
