School supporters stage demonstration
Teachers, parents and students joined a roadside protest with the West End Warriors campaign group to preserve an historic school that could close under reforms to public education.
Ellen-Kate Horton, a campaigner and former permanent secretary for education, said the pressure group, which has been at the forefront of protests against closing West End Primary School, had been “very pleased” to see the parent-teacher association organise a show of support.
They gathered with placards early yesterday along Somerset Road outside St James Church Hall, the site of the genesis of West End Primary, a historically Black school, 155 years ago.
West End Warriors are scheduled to meet online tomorrow with Diallo Rabain, the education minister, to discuss the history and legacy of the school — earmarked for closure in favour of Somerset Primary School.
Ms Horton said: “It ought to be interesting covering 155 years in a 55-minute meeting.”
She described the roadside protest from 8am as a diverse mixture of “parents, teachers, warriors and Somerset residents”.
Ms Horton said the West End Warriors had been told a decision was imminent on the school’s fate.
“They claim they are making their decision by the end of this month.”
She added it was “quite possible” more protests would follow.
“Parents were asking when we would be back.”
