A “divine” musical comedy featuring an undercover witness to a crime who ends up revamping a nuns’ choir into a hit show is coming to the stage.

The Berkeley Institute’s drama programme, featuring more than 20 talented students, is bringing the Broadway musical Sister Act: The Musical to Bermuda on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday next week.

The wider art and technical skills of the school pitched in for the show at the school’s cafetorium for the adaptation of the 1992 crime comedy Sister Act.

Students donned costumes and danced their way through an online video calling on the community to “get your groove on” and come out to enjoy their “disco-tastic production”.

The redemption story starred Whoopi Goldberg, undercover in a convent as Sister Mary Clarence after witnessing a crime — who changes the choir into hit performers.

The production is largely student-run, including the stage management, lighting and sound, acting and singing.

Joelle Williams, drama teacher and director, said that the arts experience gave pupils “a creative outlet, while developing necessary skills like teamwork, public speaking and developing self-confidence they embody for life”.

She added: “It has happened through previous school productions, where students join the play, discover different talents, and gain a different perspective of self-awareness, which in turn helps them to become better students, looking at their future in a different light. It’s exciting to see.”

Tickets are available online at the gpass.bm site at $25 for general admission, $65 for green patrons and $85 for and gold patrons.

Doors open at 5.30pm on Thursday and the show begins at 6.30pm. Opening time is 6pm next Saturday with a 7pm showtime, while Sunday, the doors open at 3pm and the show starts at 4pm.
