The cut-off to apply for the 2024 public service bursary award scheme is Saturday.

The award goes to qualifying candidates who meet the needs of government departments in specialised areas.

Bursaries are valued at $20,000 annually for up to five years.

Channa McGowan, a public health nurse and 2018 bursary award winner, said her job allowed her to give care and interact with people daily.

“I could be a community health nurse one day, a health visitor the next day and a sexual health nurse on Friday.

“I strongly recommend applying for the bursary because it provided me with financial stability to finish my nursing degree at Middlesex University, UK.”

Ania Gilbert, a 2020 bursary award winner, received funding to complete the final two years of her undergraduate degree at Mount Saint Vincent University, Canada.

She applauded her job’s hands-on experience in financial management and accounting.

Beyond funding, she said the bursary opened the door to a full-time job after graduation.

After completing a bachelor’s degree, Ms Gilbert was placed in the Department of Education as a trainee comptroller assisting staff with financial reports and financial data.

The Public Service Commission awards bursaries to applicants in courses at a university, college or other training institution for professional or technical qualifications.

The award contributes to student expenses. It is not expected to cover all tuition or other costs.
