School career fair helps to point the way to job opportunities
Pupils at West End Primary School got a taste of working life during a daylong career fair.
The Sandys school featured 26 stands where professionals gave five-minute presentations on their jobs and what they entailed.
Students also got to wear the uniforms of what profession they wanted to take up when they were older.
Nerissa Gilbert, the acting principal of West End Primary, said that the fair was intended to show pupils how their classes related to their career aspirations.
She added: “They loved it ― they were very excited and they enjoyed speaking to the different professionals, getting to know what these jobs are all about and what people in the world do.
“The career fair is a significant part of our commitment to preparing students for future jobs and future success.
“It’s the integration of interdisciplinary subjects and how it relates to different professions. It just demonstrates real-world applications for what they study in class.”
Pupils attended the career fair by grade, with P1 youngsters attending at the start while P6 children ended the fair at about 3pm.
The fair featured an accountant, a nurse, a chef from Cambridge Beaches and a nail stylist. Many of the professionals were also former West End Primary School pupils.
Ms Gilbert said that it was important for the children to see a range of professionals.
She explained: “A lot of children tend to want to be police officers or firemen, so for our first year we decided to switch it up.”
Ms Gilbert said that although the West End Primary had smaller career fairs in the past, this was the first time it held a school-wide fair available to all pupils.
She described last week’s event as “very successful”, adding that many comments from those who attended said it was a “wonderful experience”.
