BHS wraps up a week of Steam learning activities
Students of Bermuda High School had the opportunity to take part in an archaeological dig, scuba diving and a flight in a small aircraft as part of their Steam week.
The four-day educational programme for secondary students covered the subjects of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics.
Primary schoolchildren will enjoy a Steam day.
Secondary students explored Steam topics across the island, while the primary and early learning students will participate in various activities in their classrooms and year groups.
Other activities offered include exploring stage production, as well as food sustainability and innovative farming practices.
Activities have included experiments featuring light boxes and clouds, and the creation of imaginary creatures and habitats.
Since opening the Innovation Centre in 2020, BHS has developed and supported a full Steam curriculum.
Carol Swainson, the head of school, said: “Steam allows students to apply academic learning in a hands-on way while exploring their interests both in and outside the classroom.”
A spokeswoman for the school added: “A Steam curriculum isn’t just about becoming an expert in the related academic areas, it is also about having the ability to utilise the skills that our students learn to collaborate and solve problems using a variety of approaches and technologies.
“It is with this vision in mind that each of the Steam Week activities was selected.
“Each activity has been developed around a problem which the students must solve. At the end of the week, each group will create and present a video identifying the problem at hand and providing a solution.”
