Three receive grants from the English Speaking Union
The English Speaking Union awarded bursaries to three Bermudian students this year.
Cree Dunn, Kari Pitcher and Hannah Stockley each received $5,000 from the organisation, which offers awards every year to students studying English or related subjects, such as journalism.
Ms Dunn, 21, who received the bursary for the third time, is studying journalism, communications, media and economics at the University of Strathclyde in Scotland.
She explained: “I want to be a corporate lawyer one day, so I feel like my major provides a good foundation for that.
“The ESU is always willing to help, especially for students pursuing English majors, and I am eternally grateful for their support.”
Ms Pitcher will pursue studies in English language and literature at Brock University in Ontario, Canada in September.
The 18-year-old plans to write a book or work in publishing.
She said: “I have excelled in English all my life, so this major was a perfect fit for me.”
Ms Stockley, 18, will study English at the University of Exeter in England from September.
She said teachers at the Bermuda High School for Girls helped her excel and find a passion for the subject.
Penny White, the secretary of the ESU’s Bermuda branch and a member of its scholarship committee, added: “We are so happy with these girls and how enthusiastic they are and we look forward to seeing them further their education.”
The ESU, which meets once a month, also financially supported two students who participated in debates overseas and will sponsor the International Independent Schools’ Public Speaking Competition this autumn.
