A charity has raised more than $25,000 for a school that educates children with learning difficulties and complex care needs.

The money was raised by the Friends of Hope Academy — which supports the Dame Marjorie Bean Hope Academy — during last month’s Bermuda Day celebrations.

Members of the charity’s Team Hope took part in the May 24 half-marathon, raising funds through sponsorship.

Margaret Phillips, the school’s principal, said the effort was a testament to the strength and unity of the community.

She noted: "Collaboration, empowerment and advocacy are three of our school values that form the foundation of our mission and the driving force behind everything we do.

“Together, we are making a tangible difference in the lives of our students and fostering a community where everyone can thrive.

“The leadership team, faculty and staff at Dame extend their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to these events.”

This year, 49 participants ran for Team Hope in the half-marathon, with some taking turns to push two students in the relay, exemplifying the spirit of empowerment and advocacy.

At the finish line, they were greeted by a lively tent hosted by staff, parents, board members and volunteers, who offered refreshments, including home-made baked goods, granola bars and protein bars.

The school also held its own sports day, which Ms Phillips described as “a remarkable success”.

She said: “Our dedicated Adaptive PE teachers and the innovative sports day committee designed activities such as adapted relay races and sensory obstacle courses, ensuring every student could participate and shine.

“The involvement of enthusiastic parents, who supported, volunteered and cheered, added to the collaborative spirit, turning the day into a heart-warming celebration of student abilities and achievements.

“The success of sports day and Team Hope highlights the power of collective effort and the unwavering commitment of our community to support our school and its mission.

“Dame looks forward to celebrating more milestones and continuing its journey of support and inclusion.”
